Pig farmers (Pig at its Best) Klaas and Pieter receive first delivery of pig feed with processed animal protein

AgruniekRijnvallei delivers first pig feed with processed animal protein

On Monday 25 July 2022, AgruniekRijnvallei (AR) delivered the first consignment of pig feed containing processed animal protein to Maatschap Mijnheer-Post in Rouveen. They are participating in 'Varken op z'n'best', Van Loon Group's innovative chain concept that attaches great importance to circularity.

This involves poultry proteins from processed by-products from the meat sector. These by-products come from animals that have been approved for human consumption. The use of these by-products contributes to closing protein and mineral cycles.

Natural and healthy
Pigs are omnivores by nature. Processed animal protein is a raw material that pigs naturally need in their diet in order to perform to the maximum without stress. Animal protein has a very favourable amino acid pattern and is more digestible for pigs than vegetable protein. Especially for young animals, we see major advantages: piglets grow faster and feel more comfortable, which makes them calmer. In addition, animal protein is a good substitute for the raw material soy, which is often discussed in connection with deforestation.

Closing the cycles
The use of this regional protein-rich raw material makes animal feed and thus pig production more circular and reduces the dependence on overseas protein sources such as soya. Commercial director Johan Schuttert: "AR has pulled out all the stops to be able to use processed animal protein. We are pleased that these efforts have resulted in AR being the first compound feed supplier, after poultry, to start using processed animal protein in pig feed. On the one hand, it will improve the results and, on the other, it will contribute to closing the cycle."

Dual assortments
In order to meet the concept requirements of all chains, AR has a range with animal material and a range without animal material. Both ranges are produced strictly separately from each other. The pig farmer must give permission in advance to use the assortment with animal material. In addition to processed animal protein, AR also uses other animal material in this range. These raw materials are also interesting from a price point of view, which reduces feed costs.

Van Loon Group opts for sustainability
Pigs at its Best is the innovative chain concept of Van Loon Group. Stan Quinten of Van Loon Group: "Within Pig at its Best, we opt for a circular approach and aim for 100% healthy pigs. The application of processed animal protein is another step forward in circularity and improved animal health. We are pleased to be the first chain to start using this high-quality circular raw material."

Separate production
Strict requirements apply to the use of processed animal protein. Animal proteins from poultry may only be used in pig feed and animal proteins from pigs only in poultry feed. The fact that AR has separate production locations means that it can use animal protein in pig feed without extra investment.
