Transport orange animals

In recent weeks, we have seen a clear increase in the number of orange animals being delivered. These are mainly pigs with damaged tails, abscesses and umbilical hernias. This not only leads to a loss of product yield, but also to stagnation in the slaughter process.

The European guidelines for determining the suitability of pigs for transport describe which animals should be classified as orange and which animals are completely unfit for transport.

An important point to note is that the NVWA has observed that animals with umbilical hernias <15 cm are regularly classified as orange. However, according to the transport guidelines, these animals may be transported as green animals among healthy pigs.

We ask suppliers and transporters to pay close attention to this.
