New provisional benchmark for antibiotic use (DDDAF) for weaned piglets from 2026

The Veterinary Medicines Authority (SDa) announced earlier this year that the provisional benchmark value for antibiotic use in weaned piglets will be reduced as of 1 January 2026. The current benchmark value of 20 animal-day doses (DDDAF) will be reduced to 15 DDDAF from 2026.

The new, lower benchmark value will apply provisionally for three years, with a gradual transition towards the new value. After that, an assessment will be made as to whether a definitive standard for ‘acceptable use’ can be established. Nothing will change for the sow/piglet and fattening pig categories.

Within VOB, the average DDDAF for weaned piglets has been below 15 since 2019.
