What is Rund op z’n Best?

Van Loon Group is the market leader in meat and convenience products, acting as a supply chain coordinator to make more sustainable food accessible and affordable for everyone. For beef, we achieve this through our innovative supply chain programme, ‘Rund op z’n Best’. This programme takes an integrated approach to the supply chain. We improve the health and welfare of our cattle, reduce the pressure on nature and the environment, and enhance the quality of the meat.

Objective of Rund op z’n Best

The aim of ‘Rund op z’n Best’ is to produce local, fair and high-quality Dutch beef, with a focus on sustainability, animal welfare and animal health. ‘Rund op z’n Best’ is based on an integrated approach that involves all links in the supply chain and centres on four pillars: (1) An integrated supply chain approach and revenue model, (2) Animal welfare and animal health, (3) Environment and nature, and (4) Meat quality.

Pillar 1: Integrated supply chain approach

‘Rund op z’n Best’ is based on integrated collaboration between all links in the beef supply chain. Thanks to close communication between cattle farmers, supply chain partners and the Van Loon Group, we focus on active collaboration between all links in the chain, enabling market developments to be directly translated into practice on the farm. Within the chain, we work with clear agreements, standardised guidance and practical support at farm level. Transparency, collaboration and continuous improvement are our top priorities. Our aim is to achieve a fair and equitable distribution of the supply chain margin so that all supply chain partners can continue to innovate and invest in further sustainability measures.

Pillar 2: Animal welfare & health

Animal welfare forms the basis of ‘Rund op z’n Best’. Participating farms operate in accordance with clear agreements on welfare and health, with a constant focus on strong, healthy animals and optimal living conditions. Within this scheme, we prioritise good lying comfort, suitable housing, sufficient feeding space and an optimal barn climate. Through intensive support, a focus on prevention and rearing resilient animals, we work together to ensure low antibiotic use.

Pillar 3: Environment and nature

Rund op z’n Best is committed to becoming even more sustainable and reducing the pressure on the natural environment. Together with partners across the supply chain, we are working to reduce our impact on the climate, including through lower emissions and reduced CO₂ emissions. Our focus is on the smart and efficient use of raw materials, circular feed flows and the responsible management of manure. By continuing to prioritise biodiversity and the environment, we are contributing to a future-proof and responsible cattle farming sector.

Pillar 4: Meat quality

The ‘Rund op z’n Best’ scheme is all about consistently high meat quality. Healthy animals, good feed and careful management form the basis for this. Consistent collaboration throughout the supply chain results in beef that is flavourful and tender, with a clear traceability and high food safety standards. With clear, consistent product specifications, we supply beef that meets the needs of the retail sector, foodservice and consumers.
